A 21-year-old Sudanese-Australian man has died after suffering critical injuries during a violent confrontation involving rival groups outside a short-term rental property in Logan, south of Brisbane, with police continuing to investigate the incident more than a week after the clash.

Jongkuch Peter Kur Jongkuch Achieu, from Redbank Plains, died in hospital after sustaining severe head injuries during the disturbance, which erupted in the early hours of 27 July outside an Airbnb property on Discovery Boulevard at Bahrs Scrub.

Queensland Police said emergency services were called shortly after 2.15am following reports of a large fight involving numerous people.

When officers arrived, Achieu was found unconscious on nearby Orchard Avenue with life-threatening head injuries.

Paramedics commenced CPR at the scene before transporting him to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition, where he remained under medical care until his death over the weekend.

On Monday, community organisation Biong Community Global publicly identified Achieu and paid tribute to him in a statement describing his death as a tragedy that had deeply affected family members, friends and the wider South Sudanese community.

The organisation said his passing represented “a loss felt profoundly by all who knew and loved him” and extended condolences to his relatives during what it described as an immensely difficult time.

Detectives believe the violence began when a group of men arrived at a birthday party being held inside the Airbnb property before a confrontation escalated into a large-scale fight involving dozens of people.

Police have alleged that members of the arriving group were armed with knives when they entered the gathering, triggering what investigators later described as an “all-out brawl”.

The fighting quickly spilled onto surrounding streets, with participants allegedly using knives as well as broken furniture during the confrontation.

Several other people suffered stab wounds and various injuries during the incident, although police said none of those injuries proved fatal.

Crime scene footage captured after the incident showed widespread damage throughout the neighbourhood.

Television images broadcast following the fight showed smashed vehicle windscreens, broken furniture scattered across the roadway and police tape surrounding nearby public areas while forensic officers examined the scene.

CCTV footage obtained during the investigation also showed hooded youths running through residential backyards after the confrontation ended.

Logan Crime Group Detective Inspector Ian Galpin previously said investigators believed two distinct groups had become involved in the violence.

He confirmed that both the original partygoers and the group that later arrived were of African background.

“There seem to be two distinct groups who came into conflict with one another,” Detective Inspector Galpin said during an earlier media briefing.

Police also confirmed that multiple knives were recovered from the scene as investigators examined how the confrontation escalated into widespread violence.

Detectives have not publicly commented on whether the deceased was directly involved in the initial confrontation or was known to police, citing the ongoing investigation.

Despite the seriousness of the incident, Queensland Police have not announced any arrests.

Investigators continue reviewing CCTV recordings, forensic evidence and witness statements in an effort to identify everyone involved.

Police have urged anyone who attended the party or possesses mobile phone footage to contact investigators as inquiries continue.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed how many people participated in the confrontation, although earlier reports indicated a substantial number were involved.

The death has renewed attention on violent incidents linked to private parties hosted in short-term rental accommodation.

Airbnb properties have occasionally been used for large gatherings that exceed occupancy limits, prompting concerns from local councils, residents and police about safety, property damage and neighbourhood disruption.

Airbnb Australia states that unauthorised parties are prohibited under its global policies and that hosts are provided with tools designed to reduce the risk of disruptive events. The company has introduced reservation screening technology and permanent restrictions on so-called “party houses” in an effort to minimise serious incidents.

The tragedy has also had a significant impact on Queensland’s South Sudanese community.

Community leaders have called for calm while the investigation continues, urging people not to draw conclusions before police establish exactly what occurred.

They have also appealed for anyone with information to assist detectives so that those responsible can be identified through the legal process.

Queensland Police have emphasised that the investigation remains active and that further charges may be laid as evidence continues to be analysed.

Detectives are working to determine the sequence of events leading to Achieu’s fatal injuries, including the roles played by individual participants during the confrontation.

Forensic examinations of weapons recovered from the scene are also continuing as investigators seek to establish precisely how the fatal injuries were inflicted.

Authorities have not released details regarding funeral arrangements, and no further information about the deceased’s medical treatment has been made public.

As the investigation progresses, police say they remain committed to identifying everyone involved in the violence and ensuring any criminal offences arising from the incident are brought before the courts.

No one has been charged over Achieu’s death at the time of publication, and the investigation remains ongoing.
